RV Refrigerator Repair in Washington
An RV refrigerator that won’t stay cold can ruin a trip and your food. Poulsbo RV repairs RV refrigerators on travel trailers, fifth wheels, and motorhomes across Washington, including propane-electric absorption fridges and newer 12-volt compressor units.
Signs Your RV Refrigerator Needs Repair
Fridge problems are mostly about cooling and which power source works:
• The fridge won’t get cold, or cools weakly
• It cools on electric but not on propane, or the reverse
• An error or fault code on the display
• The fridge won’t power on at all
• A strong ammonia smell, which points to a cooling unit leak
• Frost buildup or uneven cooling inside
Why RV Refrigerators Stop Cooling
Most RV fridges are absorption units that cool with no moving parts by heating an ammonia solution, on either propane or electric. That design has specific failure points: on gas, a clogged burner orifice, weak igniter, or failed gas valve; on electric, a burned-out heating element; and on the control side, a failed circuit board. Absorption fridges are also sensitive to being run while the RV is parked well off-level, which can cause a permanent blockage in the cooling unit. An ammonia smell or yellow residue means the cooling unit itself has failed. Newer 12-volt compressor fridges fail differently, usually at the compressor or control board.
Our RV Refrigerator Services
• Cooling diagnosis on both propane and electric
• Burner orifice cleaning and igniter service
• Gas valve and heating element replacement
• Control board and circuit board repair
• Cooling unit assessment and replacement
• 12-volt compressor refrigerator repair
• Full refrigerator replacement and installation
Our Refrigerator Repair Process
1. We confirm cooling performance on each power source
2. We test the gas side, the electric side, and the control board
3. We check the cooling unit for signs of failure
4. We provide a written estimate before ordering parts
5. We make the repair or recommend replacement if it’s the better value
6. We verify the fridge cools properly and holds temperature
Why Fridge Problems Are Worth Diagnosing Early
Many refrigerator faults are small, affordable parts, an igniter, an element, an orifice, but the cooling unit is the expensive part, and running a struggling absorption fridge off-level or with poor ventilation can push it toward a full cooling-unit failure. Diagnosing the specific fault early often means a minor repair instead of replacing the cooling unit or the whole appliance. It also means not losing a fridge full of food on the road.
How to Keep Your RV Refrigerator Cooling
• Keep the RV reasonably level when the fridge is running
• Keep the exterior vents clear for proper airflow over the coils
• Start the fridge several hours before loading it for a trip
• Don’t overpack it; cold air needs to circulate
• Have the burner and igniter cleaned periodically
• Address weak cooling early before the cooling unit is affected
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't my RV fridge get cold?
On an absorption fridge it could be a gas-side fault, a failed heating element, a control board, or a blocked cooling unit. We test each power source to pinpoint the cause.
What does an ammonia smell from my fridge mean?
It usually means the cooling unit has developed a leak and failed. At that point the cooling unit needs replacement, or in some cases the whole fridge is the better value.
Does parking off-level really hurt the fridge?
For absorption fridges, yes. Running them well off-level can cause a permanent blockage in the cooling unit. Keeping the RV reasonably level protects it.
My fridge works on electric but not propane. Why?
That’s a gas-side issue: typically the burner orifice, igniter, or gas valve. We service the propane circuit to restore cooling on gas.
Is it worth repairing my RV fridge?
If the cooling unit is good, repairs are very cost-effective. If the cooling unit has failed, we’ll compare a cooling-unit replacement against a new fridge so you can choose.
